To day, Monday morning, the new generation leadership of my house( don't worry! the simple meaning is, my son and daughter- in-law, both working in International corporate giants), are seen: 1.Talking loudly, walking fast from one room to another and even skipping the stair steps to run up stairs and immediately back. 2. Asking their mother(formerly my wife--Bharya: one required to be governed, by me. Now acting as a home secretary to my son, daughter in law and grandson)in quick succession "something"-----yes I know only that much. Asking what is the reason for the tumult, usually, makes it more complex. Appa you won't understand it! By saying so my son will remind me of the dozens of complex difficult situations that I have come across in my life! And also I will be horripulated by the thought how I UNDERSTOOD them all well and solved them. But I have come to know that if I explain , He won't be impressed much. If he is in a positive mood, he will half jokingly imitate me, saying, Appa! Gone are those days!! Any way, I have not lost 'all' of my common sense to interfere causing delay and increasing tension. My wife's interference, I have observed, has some positive effect. She is helpful to them in their domestic matters. 3. Some drawers are pulled with sound, almirah doors banged by one or both of the New Generation.( A storm in the tea-cup!, the old cynic murmured under breath) 4. Oh! I got it!! Who else will keep such certificates here!, other than you?! daughter in law Oh! Got it!! Nice!!! Thank you!!!! The thing that came like a mountain! Now it turned out to be a mist! (Mala pole vannathu manju pole poyi) My wife remarked. For every instance, she will come ready with a pro verb or old saying. I was reminded of a story my Appappa(grand dad) told me , the context I don't remember well, though.
A well to do Namboodiri(Malayali Brahmin) was taking rest and chewing betal mix, after lunch. A servant came running and told: My lord(Tirumeni) Unni(smallest child of the Brahmin) fell in the well!!..... Oh! God.........He started moving towards the distant well. Now, another servant came from another side and said crying: Master the southern end of the house(illam) has caught fire!!!. The Namboodi, going towards the well, stopped and moved towards the southern end of the house. Then came from inside the house, a maid servant, saying loudly in an anxious voice: My God!! The mistress of the interior(akathulla alu) has started complaining about her labor pain!!
Not knowing where to go first, the Naboodiri was confused. But he thought: While completing this chewing this Betal mix, I will think over the priority and decide the work plan................ Chewing completed.
He decided to go himself to the well where in his youngest son has fallen. Calling for help on the way, if no body turns up he himself will get into the well for rescuing the child.
He told the servants to cry and shout for neighbors' help so that the fire on the house can be brought under control and in due course, extinguished. The Maid servant became impatient: What about Our ladies labor pain? There is no use of rushing there! It will take its own natural time. Observe! and ask Parvathi to relax!! No "what do we learn from this story" implied.
